Overview
Dis-Chem Pharmacies has an opportunity for a Security Guard to render professional security services in line with the Private Security Industry Regulations Act 56 of 2001, and Dis-Chemโs security standards. The role safeguards company assets, property, staff and customers by maintaining a highly visible presence, controlling access, preventing losses, investigating disturbances and responding to emergencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct visible patrols; deter, detect and report suspicious or criminal activities.
- Control access for vehicles and pedestrians; verify and record authorisations.
- Perform searches (personnel, vehicles, suppliers, merchandisers) in line with SOPs.
- Monitor alarms/CCTV; operate detection and emergency equipment.
- Investigate signs of damage or unlawful entry; compile detailed incident reports.
- Support opening/closing procedures; ensure windows/doors/taps are secured.
- Maintain occurrence books, registers and required documentation accurately.
- Oversee refuse removal checks and goods-control processes (incl. staff purchases).
- Provide professional customer service to staff, suppliers and visitors.
- Coordinate with police, emergency and first-responder teams when required.
- Enforce site rules and safety measures; assist with evacuations and crowd control.
- Remain at post when on duty; maintain constant situational awareness.
Requirements & Skills
Essential
- Grade 12 / Senior Certificate (Matric).
- PSIRA Grade C accreditation and active PSIRA registration.
- Minimum 3 yearsโ general security exposure in retail/shopping malls/warehouses.
- Solid knowledge of PSIRA regulations, security SOPs and loss-prevention practices.
- English literacy (read, write, speak).
Advantageous
- At least 1 year in a similar Security Guard role.
- Additional language proficiency.
Competencies & Conditions of Employment
- Fire, emergency, Health & Safety exposure/training.
- South African citizen; clear criminal and credit record (MIE checks).
- Valid driverโs licence and reliable transport; PDP when deployed as a driver.
- Professional, alert, composed under pressure; able to interpret risks and respond quickly.
- Strong reporting, observation and interpersonal skills; customer-service orientation.
