South African CV Guide โ€“ Part 2

Tailoring, Common Mistakes, and Plug-and-Play Templates

If Part 1 covered the what, this covers the how fast. Use these steps to tailor your CV to any South African job ad in 10 minutes, avoid deal-breakers, and drop in sector-specific blocks you can reuse.

1) Tailor your CV in 10 minutes (repeatable routine)

Step 1: Strip the ad for keywords (3 min).
Highlight exact words in the advert: tools (e.g., Pastel, Opera/Roomseeker, SAP), licences (Code 10/14, PDP, forklift), standards (POPIA, OHS, FICA/KYC), soft skills (customer service, detail-oriented).

Step 2: Re-title + re-order (2 min).

  • Change your CVโ€™s Target Role to the exact job title.
  • Re-order Key Skills so the advertโ€™s must-haves are first.
  • Move the most relevant job under Experience to the top.

Step 3: Add 3 proof bullets (3 min).
Convert duties into measurable wins: volume, speed, quality, savings, safety.

โ€œProcessed 120+ POS transactions/day with 100% cash-up accuracy.โ€
โ€œReduced debtor days from 62 โ†’ 42 using Sage.โ€

Step 4: Compliance check (2 min).

  • Include only what the advert asks for (e.g., Z83 + short CV for DPSA).
  • Keep POPIA-safe: SA Citizen | ID available on request.
  • File name: Name_Surname_TargetRole_CV.pdf.

2) 12 common SA CV mistakes (and quick fixes)

  1. Wrong file type โ†’ Always PDF (unless portal asks for Word).
  2. Busy layouts โ†’ No tables/columns that break ATS.
  3. Generic summary โ†’ Rewrite to match the advertโ€™s language.
  4. No numbers โ†’ Add volume/speed/quality/savings/safety metrics.
  5. Vague dates โ†’ Use MMM YYYY โ€“ Present.
  6. Long CV for entry-level โ†’ 1โ€“2 pages is fine.
  7. Uncontactable referees โ†’ Get permission and current numbers.
  8. Including ID/full address โ†’ POPIA risk; keep it โ€œavailable on requestโ€.
  9. Wrong licence โ†’ State Code + PDP clearly (drivers).
  10. Attachments overload โ†’ Only what the ad requests (certified copies if asked).
  11. Typos in company names โ†’ Proofread proper nouns.
  12. Salary/notice period missing (when asked) โ†’ Add in final line or cover letter.

3) ATS-friendly formatting (quick rules)

  • Font: Calibri/Arial/Cambria (10.5โ€“11.5 pt body, 13โ€“16 pt headings).
  • Section order: Target Role โ†’ Profile โ†’ Key Skills โ†’ Experience โ†’ Education โ†’ Licences/Certs โ†’ References.
  • Keywords: mirror advert terms exactly (KYC/FICA, OTIF, POPIA, AutoCAD).
  • No graphics, headshots, or text boxes. Simple bullets only.
